Interior Design And Interior Architecture

"Interior design is an art. It is not a fine art. It cannot luxuriate in its independence ascan painting and sculpture, forming itself without regard to any but aesthetic demands. It is,instead, a hardworking art, with serious and sometimes mundane problems to solve. . . . Interiordesign is also a craft. Technique and experience count a lot in this field, just as they do in thefinest of fine arts. . . . [Expertise] is achieved through the increasingly rigorous education that ourprofession requires and through the subsequent practical application of that education." Stanley Abercrombie, FAIA

Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, product design and furniture design in addition to traditional decoration. An interior designer is a person who is considered an expert in the field of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job. Interior design is a creative practice that analyzes programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents. In some jurisdictions, interior designers must be licensed to practice.

Interior Design Schools: Choosing The Right One

Finding the right school is a time consuming and important task. Knowing some basic things to look for in a school may help narrow the field down. For example, most schools should now offer courses in CAD (computer aided drawing) to keep their students knowledgeable in the newest technologies. Additionally, most interior design schools begin by teaching the fundamentals and move upwards to harder classes from there—from drawing and drafting to business ethics and retail design. Other things to consider when choosing an interior design school include:

Students looking into an interior design program should be careful not to confuse interior design with interior decorating. Interior decorating, which covers furnishings, floor coverings, paints and placement, is included under the umbrella of design, but design is more involved. Interior design involves ceiling and wall placement, window and door placement, lighting, space planning, and knowing construction, among other areas of expertise. When you look for an interior design school, make sure it offers courses or an emphasis in the area(s) in which you are interested.

Bachelor Of Applied Arts - Interior Design

Interior designers contribute to the well-being of society by designing built environments that are functional, holistically developed, and aesthetically pleasing. Today's designers are aware of diverse cultural needs, accountable for accessible, sustainable and environmental decisions, and sensitive to issues of taste, gender and perception.

Humber's Interior Design program lets students successfully develop and combine creative talent with research skills, technology and problem solving. The curriculum is supported by a unique blend of courses in liberal arts and applied science. Interior design studios enable mastery of the design process, presentation abilities, and vital project administration/business skills. Innovative design projects are integrated across the curriculum each semester. Directed work placement provides hands-on, job-ready capability. Collaboration with related design disciplines and with community-based projects provides a virtual-studio experience. There's also a site-tutorial where students observe and reflect on the perception of spaces and human behaviour. Finally, students are encouraged to select, research, develop, and document a large-scale public project from initial concept to construction documentation. Faculty are currently working on a joint venture proposal for a virtual design studio project with design schools across Canada and Europe.

*In 2000, our diploma program was first to receive professional accreditation by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER). FIDER has since accredited Humber's degree program. The program is also recognized by the Association for Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO).

The paid work term is from May to August after semester six, and lasts 14 weeks. Students must find their own placement, and are encouraged to take career management workshops to develop effective job search skills. The school provides support, such as working with business and industry to identify co-op employment opportunities.

Any Grade 12U or OAC Mathematics. Students who do not possess Grade 12U or OAC Mathematics or have achieved a mark below 60 per cent may be considered for admission. Students will be required to complete a math equivalency course during first year;

Note: Grade and/or course requirements are used in the selection process for all programs. Refer to admissions.humber.ca/cutoffs for admissions cut-offs. If applicants are enrolled in Grade 12 required subjects (as indicated above), in the second semester (February to June), Grade 11 marks will be used. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Refer to the Selection Procedures section for more information

Over 53 per cent of the members of the Interior Designers of Canada work in Ontario.

Humber has been granted a consent by the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this applied degree for a five-year term starting March 3, 2005. Humber shall ensure that all students admitted to the above-named program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame.

Humber also offers a two-year Interior Decorating diploma program 31511 (not a formal foundation for the Interior Design degree program). A bridging program is currently under development to help Interior Design diploma graduates bridge into the fourth year of the Interior Design degree program (commencing in the winter semester of 2008).

Are you interested in how color, lighting, space and furnishings come together to make a comfortable, easily accessible, practical living or work environment?  Are you creative, imaginative and artistic?  Are you committed to creating functional, healthy, and attractive spaces that also meet building codes and other technical requirements? Are you interested in learning how to incorporate energy saving details into the design of a home or business?  Do you enjoy working on teams and collaborating with other people on projects?  Are you comfortable selling your ideas to others?  Are you interested in historic preservation of homes and public buildings?

An Interior Design major prepares you for a career in working with clients to develop a design for their home or work environment.  Career paths include planning interiors of corporate offices, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, or a variety of other establishments; assisting clients with their needs for lighting, furniture and wallcovering; consulting with clients on kitchen and bathroom design, window treatment and floor coverings; working in historic preservation; and working in stage design for the theatre.

Interior Design graduates typically work as interior designers in a wide range of settings, both commercial and residential.  Most concentrate within design specialties, such as designing for the hospitality or health care industry, entertainment industry, government/institutional agencies, restaurants, or residential kitchens and baths.
